🇺🇸 Counting down to the election with 10 Reasons for Ross 🇺🇸

Kicking off this list with Reason number 1️⃣0️⃣ is my commitment to the environment. Beginning with my years as a Boy Scout and continuing with my involvement with organizations like Wilton Pollinator Pathway, I am invested in and care deeply about the environment and would bring this devotion to Hartford. I know the impact climate change has on our health, our economies, and our community’s future. I vow to always vote in favor of legislation that protects our environment, like Public Act 13 – 179. This bill, raised by the Environmental Committee, prepares Connecticut for the effects of climate change. My opponent was one of only six members of the House to vote against preparing for climate change. We can do better.

Priorities

Building a Vibrant Economy

Building a vibrant economy in Connecticut requires addressing a financial crisis that is the result of decades of negligence. Pension contribution commitments have not been fulfilled, poor strategic decisions have been made, and little has been done to foster a long-term productive private-public business relationship. I believe the following three strategies will change the direction of Connecticut and set it on a path to a bright fiscal future.

 1. Create a robust business roundtable.

Chaired by the Governor and supported by dedicated staff, Business Roundtables create forums for ongoing dialogue between state and business leaders. The core focus of the discussion is to create and maintain the best corporate climate, centered on critical topics that will advance economic growth and business performance.

The Department of Economic and Community Development should be refocused to support strategies outlined by the Business Roundtable, as well as narrow its scope to the programs and services that help companies prosper.

No roundtable like this exists on an ongoing basis in the state of Connecticut. The result is inconsistent application of policy and “one off” efforts that lack coordination and follow through. Projected state investment is minimal while the potential payoff of creating an attractive business climate is considerable.

Keeping our families safe from gun violence

I support legislation to close loopholes in our background check system; to make it illegal for those on the FBI terror watch list to buy a gun; to repeal the Dickey Amendment that bans gun violence research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); to encourage licensing requirements for handgun purchases; and to help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. The presence of guns in society creates a hidden tax as people and municipalities make investments to protect themselves and their citizens from gun violence. Consequently, I endorse the taxation of weapons, ammunition and large capacity magazines. The money collected through this taxation will be dedicated to increasing the resources necessary to create a safe society.

SUPPORTING QUALITY SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

Education is at the heart of why people move to New Canaan and Wilton. Our world-class schools prepare our daughters and sons for the considerable challenges they will face for the rest of their lives. Schools must have adequate resources, take advantage of the latest technology, and integrate that technology into the most appropriate teaching approach for each student. The student thrives when the learning experience is personal, and the district succeeds when it makes efficient use of its resources.

Addressing a transportation infrastructure in crisis

Connecticut is in an economic competition against other states and, in order to win, we need a modern, reliable and safe transportation system – something we do not currently have. Sections of many of our major highways, as well as streets such as Route 7 for which the state is responsible, are almost undriveable. The threatened cuts to our mass transit systems will cripple our ability to commute to work and move goods and services to our towns, and they will make the lives of the poorest members of our communities even more difficult. Rebuilding our transportation network so people can get to work, businesses can grow, and our towns can thrive depends on proper funding and ensuring that, like our neighboring states, everyone contributes their fair share.

Put simply, when Connecticut invests in our roads, bridges, rail and buses, it is investing in the economy, in job growth and in the quality of life in our communities. I will build the coalitions necessary to ensure these investments are made wisely and well to help our state thrive.

    10:30 amComstock Community Center

Because many activities concerning the separation of families on our borders have been scheduled for June 30th, the Wilton DTC is moving their campaign launch for their three local candidates to July 28th.

Join the Wilton DTC and Ross at 10:30 AM at the Comstock Community Center with Will Haskell (running for the State Senate, 26th District against Toni Boucher) and Stephanie Thomas (running for the State House, 143rd District against Gail Lavielle) to kick off their campaigns with coordinated door knocking.

There will be coffee and donuts and an opportunity  to hear from the candidates after a brief but informative canvassing training, at which point small groups will go door-knocking in Wilton to encourage support for our Democratic slate. We will be focusing on doors where we know Democrats live.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED for this effort. Please email Vicki Rossi at vickirossi06@gmail.com if you can participate, or just come along!

6:00 AM - 8:00 PMYour Local Polling Station

Tuesday, August 14th are Connecticut's Primary Elections. As I expressed in a recent letter to the editor, I am not sure there has ever been a more important time to exercise your right to vote than this year -- no matter your party affiliation.

I have my preferences for Democratic candidates, but I urge you to vote for Ned Lamont for Governor. I firmly believe that Joe Ganim's choices should eliminate him as a viable candidate for election to the highest office in Connecticut.

Find all the information you need to get out and vote tomorrow on Connecticut's Official State Website.

    See you at the polls!
